The first time I saw it on the shelves, I thought to myself, “waterproof decking tape? Is that a danger? It is. But before we get into it, let’s take a look at how a simple deck can be waterproofed.
Decking tape comes in two varieties – the types that you apply to the surface of the wood , and those that must be glued to the surface via the use of a specific glue. This type is more challenging and costly. To make it easier for the DIYer (me), there are two types of vinyl decking tapes available on the market today. Standard and in-screw tapes are the most popular.
Waterproof decking tape, as the name suggests, is a tape meant to be used to waterproof. The tape’s adhesive binds waterproof vinyl to the decking surface and prevents moisture from getting in. This is great for decks made from plastic since plastic does not have the properties to withstand moisture. For decks made from wood, however, the tape will not work because the required water resistance is not present.
Like any other type of tape waterproof decking tape needs to be carefully applied to both surfaces to ensure that it does its job. First, place the tape on your wood deck. Then, secure the tape to the lumber. Before you are ready to cut the tape, however you should make sure that the tape is tightly attached to the the decking surface. This can be done by pressing down on both surfaces using your hands. If you do it correctly, you will not notice that the tape is there. It is not advisable to rip the tape if it is damaged.
Waterproof decking tape also has a special application method that must be handled with caution. The edges of the tape can be damaged due to the force of cutting it. Instead employ a knife or other instrument to cut the tape. You can also use the blade of a screwdriver or a small electric implement to scrape off excess tape prior to cutting. You can be certain that the tape won’t cause any damage to the decking surface if you take care when handling it.
The application method for this kind of tape is relatively simple. Simply apply water to the tape, then rub it onto the decking material. Never, under any circumstance, rub the tape if it is damp. This could cause the tape to be damaged by the presence of water or moisture.
After the tape has been applied to the decking material you must allow it to dry. Don’t use any tools to try to make the tape loosen up or to try and remove any excess tape from the surface. The tape should remain in place unless you try to remove it. This is a better time to use a knife to remove any dirt or debris that might have been generated during the application process.
Waterproof decking tape can be available in many hardware stores and is quite affordable. It is worth looking at the cost of maintaining a decking surface that is waterproof, rather than replacing it every year due to cracks. By following these basic procedures you can ensure the protection of your decking surface from damage from the elements.
