About Island News Professional

Island News is published by Island Press, a division of Hearst Magazines, Inc. The first issue was dated Nov. 24, 1931. The title was changed to the Stroller’s Weekly. It was later changed to the Island News Professional and Douglas Island News. H. B. Selby & E. S. Stevens edited the issue. The name was not changed until March 3, 1933, when the final edition was issued.

Island News Professional brought several new writers to Alaska to write articles about business on the islands and in the surrounding areas. The pages also included news and travel columns, a new sports section and a mining report. a feature story on the Kenai Fjords National Park, an island weather report, a new feature story on the Kenai Wildlife Park, a cultural calendar, a wildlife report, and mining reports. Another important addition was an obituary from the local area. The obituaries were alphabetically listed under each city in this issue. This made it easier for readers to find the right information. Island News Professional was primarily an online magazine, however it also had business-oriented pages. They were divided into two sections that included the Commercial Business section, which dealt with the business owners and their companies as well as the Employment and Training section, that was designed to keep readers informed of job openings in the local area.
